The Invisible Line

Can a man live without a religion?

If you said man can live without a religion, then who defines his morality?

He himself?

Are you sure?

  • morality is in men himself? defined by sth called conscience?

religions are just widely accepted interpretations by men of god. once upon a time, killing infidels was the right thing to do...as defined by religious authority.

some pple just refuse to believe them. but that doesn't mean they do not have a moral code. anyone

who has hurt himself knows how hurt feels like so they learn not to do it to others.

as for buddhism, right or wrong doesn't matter, in the end, u just bear the consequences. that's the way of life.

  • Yeah. Actually, if u look at the pre-Christian period in history, religion just explains natural phenomenon like lightning and plagues, rather than provide moral code.

But ancient greek and chinese philosophers have similarly pondered about morality. and the basis of their theories are used in professional ethics today. (i think there's a difference b/w ethics and moral but i can't remember)

what is good and wrong? sometimes, like ethics the line is blurred and debatable. so I believe such rhetorical debates will help us identify the good and bad.

Following a moral code with blind faith is really allowing us to be manipulated.

  • Ahhh... here is the dangerous part.

Everything is defined by man himself.

    Anyway, did i mention christianity?

  • no lah you didn't. i was just using it as an example as contrast against a free thinker. my example can apply to jews, muslims, hindus and scientologists alike! just that i know more about christianity than other religions so i chose to use it specifically as my example.

  • Haha... understood.

As i said, all are interpreted by man himself. So there are bound to be a mistake or two.

I don't know the answer also.
