Mind Twister
Hey man, tell you a secret.
During World War 2, the Americans blasted their Pearl Harbour so that they could go to war.
Now, they hacked down their own NY's twin towers so that they can occupy Afghanistan and Iraq for their oil.
Far fetched? But that's what many believe, especially in the Middle East.
I read The Straits Times (TST, my one and fav newspaper, 'cos there is only one readable English paper in Singapore.) today and this interview set me thinking. Try putting yourself as the person interviewed. Then answer the questions the interviewer asked.
It will be fun.
Excerpt:
It isn't the general view of the world of what happened on Sept 11. But it's an, ah, interesting one. Where did you see the evidence that the Americans attacked their own city, blowing themselves up?
If they haven't done that, it's even worse. That means they are a very weak country..... The second thing is that we're amazed that they filmed the whole event from the time the plane took off up to the end. That means they knew what was about to happen....
Do you believe that?
Yes I do.
Really believe that?
You may not believe it, but some peopl, the Zionist, plotted the one in London, I believe....
We have a problem. You don't believe my perception of things. I don't believe your perception. So what do we do?
I believe you because I respect any belief and culture.
I'm not saying about religion. Rather Manhattan. Let's just take the Twin Towers incident. Your perception and mine perception of what happened are completely different. Not to mention the London bombings, where a lot of completely innocent people died, killed you say, by the British themselves. Well, it's very hard for me to believe that...
You should believe it in future.
So how should we resolve this?....
By Anthony Paul, interviewing Dr Rafat Bayat, a US-educated sociologist and girl's school manager. For full interview, please read TST, Review section pg 22, July 25.
We truly live in a world where there have millions of diverse cultures and ideas. Somehow, other people's opinions should be respected. But when they seriously deviate from your ideas, how should you react?
Ah.... how to bridge the great divide?
