Want To Bet?

The government said it will listen to the feedback of the people.

Listen. Only. Fullstop.

Many people said no. But the govt seemed very tempted to welcome a casino in Singapore 'cos of the economical benefits. Money the devil over here?

Some joker from the parlaiment said that if the people said 'no' and the govt ban casino in Singapore, it will be making headlines across the world just like when the govt banned chewing gums in the past. She is afraid of us being stereotyped as the country where many things are banned.

Oh.... how thoughtful.. but that seems rubbish to me.

Anyway.. guess it's inevitable that a casino will be here.. as all the 'money experts' said that it will give hard-earned revenues to the govt. Well... experts said so.. what can normal citizens say?

To me... all are just another time wasting, pointless debate of the inevitable.

  • Do you get the feeling that the government, or gahment has already made up its mind before it purported to 'open up the casino debate to the people'?

Nevertheless, the act of pretending to listen is vital to the government because a government will enjoy increased legitimacy if it is seen as listening to the people, so it becomes a 'government of the people' enjoying the people's true affectionate support. That is a mandate too, a precious one. But the key word is seen. What is apparent is important too.

  • yeah. i get this feeling too. hahaah. the debate is just for show. to put up a 'consultative' front.

even if the people strongly object to it, they will still use their, "i know better" attitude.

this is different from other tough measures like CPF cut because the end result is unknown.

listening to the people support is to make it look like a 'national decision', so if it fails...can't totally blame the govt.

but then, i dunno if we will know if it fails, there's always media cover-up

    jinny
