Guan Yu VS The Rest

Why Guan Yu is more popular than Zhao Yun? Zhao Yun did not lose to Guan Yu in terms of looks, wisdom and bravery. And somemore Zhao Yun is Zhuge Liang's fav aide.

Then why there are only Guan Yu's potraits but no Zhao Yun's one? I'm baffled.

Yah.... not to forget all time fav Bruce Lee. I seemed not able to find posters or sorts of about him leh.. so sad. Maybe that's what people are saying that if you can get what you want easily, then you won't treasure it.

Wah lau.... so troublesome.

  • Firstly, Zhao Yun did not swear brotherhood with Liu Bei in the Peach Garden, if you wish to go by the novel. This removes the romantic veneer behind his character because he will only be remembered as a great and loyal fighter, but there is no special romantic quality about him to elevate him to the status of a main character. This is why some people have even elevated Guan Yu to god status even!

Secondly, I personally feel that Zhao Yun was merely a good fighter. A damn good one. We cannot forget what he did at Changban Bridge, saving Liu Chan. Or his role as bodyguard when Liu Bei married Sun Quan's sister. Amongst many other valorous deeds. But somehow I feel that he was never as great a commander as Guan Yu was. If you want someone to rescue you from a sea of 1,000 enemy troops in a do-or-die mission, you'd pick Zhao Yun, but if you want someone to command a 100,000 grand army, you'd pick Guan Yu, because Guan Yu was more inspiring and was better schooled in military tactics. Perhaps it is because of this that Guan Yu is more recognised by people.

Thirdly I would think although Zhao Yun was humbler, calmer and arguably more reliable than Guan Yu was, you'll have to say he had a somewhat bland personality. Guan Yu, on the other hand, has a more interesting character. He was proud to the point of being arrogant, he had a temper, sometimes he was rash- it could have been these flaws that made him more celebrated as a more realistic, memorable and believable character. Basically, he was more human. Zhao Yun, on the other hand, seems perfect. No character flaws. No airs. Handsome. He is almost unreal.

Lastly I think Jiang Wei was Zhuge Liang's favourite, not Zhao Yun.

    To sum up,
If I wanted a bodyguard, I would pick Zhao Yun.
If I wanted a man to command a 100,000 strong army, I would pick Guan Yu.
If I had to read the biography of either's, I would pick Guan Yu's.

    Yours truly
    Zhuge Pi
